Commentary—

Last month, I listed the people and causes that I am thankful for. As we bring 2011 to a close and the New Year begins, I offer up my “three cheers, let’s hear it for:”

• Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown for putting into action the belief that every vote counts. Her office initiated a pilot project giving iPads to voters with disabilities in the first Congressional district to decide if this technology will be implemented statewide in the 2012 general election.
  
• Governor John Kitzhaber for bringing a halt to the death penalty which I applaud and support. His belief that “it is neither fair nor just, swift or certain. It is not applied equally to all.” It is a perversion of justice that the single best indicator of who will and will not be executed has nothing to do with the circumstances of a crime or the findings of a jury.”       
  
• All of you who have shown your support for W2D and contributed to our PAC and attend our monthly programs. You have helped expand our unique group. And with your continued support, I feel confident we will take back the Oregon House in November and reelect President Obama because as I learned at the Oregon Summit: Majority Matters!
